Babalu Aye |
He is the Lord of Pestilence,
but his name literally means "Father of the Earth". He is a greatly
feared and greatly loved orisha because he not only can bring illness and
disease to people, he can also take it away. He is the orisha of suffering
and those who suffer from illness or disease turn to him for comfort. When
a person is afflicted it is said that it's because Babalu-Aye has touched
them and has entered into a relationship with them. But he not only bestows
and removes these curses, he bears them all himself as well. He is the embodiment
of endurance and perseverance no matter how great the struggle. He teaches
us how to cope. He is usually depicted as a beggar, diseased, disfigured,
crippled, and misshapen, always leaning on a crutch. He usually has one
or more dogs as companions because few people wish to be near him. Babalu-Aye
enjoys offerings of bread (especially when it's soaked in olive oil or with
honey spread on it), corn, dry grains, dry beans, dry cereal, sesame seeds,
and white wine. He does NOT like water because it irritates his sores. He
also appreciates images of dogs and a little offering of a bowl of milk
or a biscuit for his dogs. A miniature crutch and some burlap cloth can
also be given to him. His colors are purple and yellow, though some people
use red. He is syncretized with Saint Lazarus, of course. |

the opener of doors leading to new opportunities, but may place obstacles
in front of the door after he opens it. Or he may not open it at all. Like

Obatala is called the Spirit
of the White Cloth. The white cloth in his title is a reference to the fabric
of existence, consciousness. Obatala is the embodiment of consciousness
and provides consciousness and understanding to others. He also helps us
to be conscious and understanding of other people as well as all aspects
of nature. The white fabric is the spirit that connects us all, the unifying
force of the universe. He is an orisha known for his calm cool demeanor
and his vast wisdom. He also helps us maintain ethical behavior, humility,
and responsibility for our actions. Obatala enjoys offerings of rice, eggs
(especially just the whites), water, milk (especially coconut milk), bones,
white dove feathers, and cotton. Obatala is also symbolic of high aspirations
so images of mountaintops also appeal to him. One thing that he absolutely
does NOT like is alcohol of any kind. As a being of consciousness, clear
thought, and purity, he disdains alcohol. His color is white, obviously.

Ogún |
Ogun is the Spirit of Iron,
the Divine Blacksmith. Because of his work at the forge he is an orisha
of industry and technology. The computer is his domain because of its connection
to technology and progress and also the locomotive train because of the
amount of iron used and because of the tremendous almost unstoppeble force
of a train. He is the orisha who clears the obstacles for you on your spiritual
path, so the machete also belongs to him. He is a fierce warrior, but one
who has the demeanor of a grim soldier who is concerned more with defense
than offense. The military and the police are also aspects of Ogun. Offerings
to him may include tools, railroad spikes, and anything made of iron. His
colors are green and black. Ogun syncretizes with Saint Peter.

She is the orisha of love, marriage, and pleasure. But gold is one of her
favorite things which also makes her the orisha of money. Those with problems
in love or finances turn to Oshun. Unlike most of the other orisha, Oshun
does not like rum or cigars, but she does like white wine or honey drinks
like mead. She also likes oranges, honey, sweets, pumpkins, jewelry (preferably
gold), perfume, mirrors, fans, peacock feathers, shells, and combs. Yes,
she likes a lot of stuff. Her color is yellow (gold). Oshun syncretizes
with Our Lady of La Caridad del Cobre and also Our Lady of Charity.

Spirit of the Wind. Like
the currents of the air, she is always changing and always causing change.
She can be a soft comforting beeze, the wind at your back, a cyclone, or
a hurricane. She is also called the Severer because she helps us change,
tearing away the extraneous, the things we don't need, so that we may more
easily evolve. She is the storm and the lightning bolt and also fire, showing
some kinship with Shango, and she is also a warrior. She is also the overseer
of the dead. Because she is change, the transition of life to death is her
domain. Cemetaries are known as Oyas' gardens. She also controls the constant
flux of the marketplace. She enjoys offerings of eggplant, masks, torn cloth,
red wine, coins, and a small broom (to sweep away the old and make room
for the new). Her colors are purple or burgundy, or a multicolored pattern.
She is syncretized as Our Lady of La Candelaria and sometimes as Saint Teresa. |
